Motivation is a complex concept. There are many things that can motivate and energise us to give a great performance at work. Some of them could be extrinsic, and therefore driven by the business, your environment, your manager or your colleagues. For example, your organisation can play a huge part in motivating you by providing an inclusive environment where you can be yourself, giving you stretch projects that allow you to challenge your skills, or providing guidance when you need it. But ultimately, that’s only one part of the equation. Understanding what truly motivates & energies you has to be driven by you. It’s about finding out what makes you tick.

So how do you figure it out? Easy. Ask yourself: Why do I work? Why do I get out of bed every day? Do you need to do something that has a clear purpose, such as being part of a trailblazing team focused on new discoveries or innovations? Or do you need to contribute to a particular cause? Is the community vibe provided by the company or your team and colleagues something you highly value?

It’s also important to remember motivation & energy aren’t constant. Even the greatest job in the world has bad days. We’re pretty sure ice cream tasters get fed up with eating frozen treats. Motivation & energy can come and go depending on stress levels or personal circumstances. But overall, understanding what gets you out of bed in the morning will help you find out what drives you, as well as help you look for opportunities that allow you to bring your whole self to work.

Of course pay and reward should be considered. But making career decisions based solely on external factors such as salary will not generate motivation. So dig deeper than just the extrinsic stuff, find out why you work where you work, and what makes you want to be your best self.
