How you can help your people take charge of their careers
Suit: Backed by the organisation
At Let’s Talk Talent, we strongly believe career development has one clear owner: the individual. Your people should be in charge of determining where they want to go and how they want to get there. But wait, this doesn’t mean you get a free pass and just let them get on with it on their own.
Whilst employees are responsible for generating purpose for themselves and moving their careers forward, you also have your part to play. As an organisation, your focus should be on the creation of an environment that will enable them to develop and thrive. Here are ways to get deeper into the subject.
Just ask yourself:
- Within your business, is the individual truly the owner of their career progression?
- Are your employees taking charge of their professional lives and manifesting ways to reach their goals?
- How might you encourage them to do so?
- Are your managers having effective career conversations?
- Do you have training opportunities and clear development pathways available for key roles?
- Are internal vacancies and mobility opportunities clear for all to access?
Have a look at your employee experience and don’t be afraid to course-correct and make changes should your career development efforts need a little revamp.
And if you’d like to find out how to truly allow individuals to take charge of their careers, have a listen of our podcast on how to have better performance management conversations here.
