Career Coaching Cards Explained: What is important to me? (status, money, family, career, fitness etc)?

Spin the career wheel and find out where you want to get to

Suit: You outside the organisation

Many of us compare ourselves to other people on a regular basis. We believe others are more successful, seem to get promoted quicker, have ambitious goals and are reaching them faster than we are. But success is an extremely personal notion. It’s about reaching meaningful goals, in your own way. So before setting off on a typical career path that will get you to focus solely on moving up in a linear fashion, make sure you ask yourself: what is actually important to me?

Using a tool such as the career wheel is a great way to get to know yourself and rate various elements (such as career, family, status) on a scale from 1 to 10. Understanding your strengths and true drivers could help you determine where you want to take your career, and what sort of organisation you want to work for. Also, what kind of speed you want to travel at. Do you have a two-year cap on working in a role so you can move fast and keep challenging yourself? Or do you prefer to soak up the knowledge that comes with a position and move a bit more slowly? Are certain values very important to you? Knowing yourself, both personally and professionally, will help you understand where you want to go and focus on the tools that will actually get you there. So take time to dig deep and determine what makes up both your head and your heart,  so that you can choose a career goal that suits both equally, without compromise.

Have a look at the career wheel below (and feel free to create your own categories). If you’d like to explore this further, give a Coach on Demand session a go to help you understand your strengths and key drivers.

Happy wheeling!
