Helping you get the most out of career conversations
Suit: Supported by my manager
Clarity is about knowing where you stand, and the only way for your team members to know exactly where they are at in terms of role expectations, strengths and improvement areas is through regular, honest developmental feedback.
Individuals need to be in a position to clearly understand the skills, traits, attributes and behaviours they need to develop in order to take ownership and accountability for their own career progression. Waiting for the annual end-of-year review to give employees feedback will not help provide them with clarity on what should be their next development focus.
As we often say at Let’s Talk Talent, the greatest gift is feedback.
But regular, honest and transparent conversations do not have to be one-sided either. Individuals should take charge of their own career progression. As such, you should be able to ask them to share their views on their skills gaps, past learning and development path as well as the support they need to move forward with the next step of their careers.
This information should give you a good head-start and help you collaborate on a development that will truly meet your people’s needs.
And if you find those career conversations a bit difficult to get started, use the Atlassian 4L retrospective technique as a template.
This simply consists of asking team members what they Love and Loathe doing, what they have Longed for and Learnt in the past when it comes to their careers. By understanding what energises and motivates your staff, you’ll be in a better position to identify and guide them through the best development opportunities for their particular aspirations.
